Gravel Driveway Cost Calculator

This gravel driveway cost calculator estimates what your gravel will cost from your own prices. Start from a quantity you already know or from the driveway’s size, enter the price per ton, tonne, cubic yard or cubic metre, and add delivery and labour if you want them in the total.

What the estimate includes

  • Material: the exact quantity × your price. If you price per ton and start from a volume (or the other way round), the density links the two.
  • Delivery: a flat amount, added once.
  • Labour or spreading: optional, per ton or tonne of material.

It does not include site preparation, excavation, landscape fabric, edging, equipment hire or tax. Add those to the total from your quotes. The estimate is only as good as the prices you enter: this site does not publish gravel prices, because they change with region, haul distance and supplier.

total = quantity × price + delivery + tons × labour per ton

Exact quantity or rounded order?

When you start from dimensions, the calculator adds your allowance and shows the suggested order rounded up to a whole ton or tonne. The cost uses the exact quantity, not the rounded order, and the results say which one it used. If your supplier charges for every ton delivered, multiply the rounded order by your price to see the higher figure.

Worked example: you need 10 tons of crushed stone. At a price of $45 per ton, the material is 10 × 45 = $450. Add a $120 delivery charge and the total is $570. These prices are example inputs to show the arithmetic, not market prices; use your supplier’s quote.

Getting a gravel driveway estimate you can compare

  • Ask each supplier for the same thing: the material name, quantity and unit (tons or cubic yards), delivered to your address.
  • Check whether the price includes delivery, fuel surcharges and tax, and whether there is a minimum load.
  • If one quote is per ton and another per cubic yard, convert using the supplier’s density with the tons to cubic yards calculator.
  • For installation, ask whether grading, fabric and compaction are included.

The gravel driveway cost guide goes through each part of the cost and works an example for a 5 ton order.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Order close to a full load. If delivery is a flat charge, it costs less per ton when spread over more tons. Ask how much one truck can bring to your address.
  • Ask the quarry or pit directly. Buying from the source can cost less than buying through a retailer, but compare the delivered price.
  • Ask the driver to spread it. Some drivers can spread stone from the truck as they tip it, which saves raking. Ask the supplier whether they offer it.
  • Measure carefully. An accurate quantity avoids both a second delivery charge and paying for stone you don’t need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate the cost of a gravel driveway?

Work out the quantity from length, width and depth, then multiply by your supplier’s price and add delivery. Choose Driveway size in the calculator to do both at once, or enter a quantity you already have.

Why doesn’t this calculator show average prices?

Gravel prices vary a lot by region, material, haul distance and supplier, and we have no reliable, current price data to publish. A made-up average could mislead your budget, so the calculator uses the prices you enter.

Does the cost include the waste allowance?

Yes, when you start from dimensions: the allowance is added to the volume before the cost is worked out. When you enter a quantity you already know, nothing is added to it.
